Basically, the optometrist (or ophthalmologist) has a few things to check!. We need to know about your vision and refractive status (i!.e!. prescription), your binocular vision (how well your eyes coordinate), and your ocular health!. There are some miscellaneous things like colourblindness that come up periodically too, but those are the big areas!.
For each, there are a number of tests!. For example, you'll be asked to read letters on an eye chart, usually with each eye independently!. You'll probably be asked to read a small card with sentences or letters on it too, to check your near vision!. Then, there'll be some mucking about with various lenses in an attempt to improve your vision!. Some weird little tests, like following a pen as it's moved around in front of you, or counting fingers held up in your peripheral vision, usually follow this!. Lastly, there's a combination of bright lights and microscopes and such to look at your eyes themselves and see how healthy they are!. Eyedrops that dilate your pupils are often used for this, especially on your first visit, and will require you to sit and wait 15+ minutes while they have their effect!.
Depending what the results are, some parts of this take longer than others!. Many things have changed with the advent of new technology, so tests can be done differently, or with computers or whatever!. If you have problems with one thing or another, there are a whole battery of other tests that your doctor can do, so your mileage may vary!Www@Answer-Health@Com

Hi: A good eye examination may consist of several things!. Nowadays, most Optometrists do pretesting with automated equipment that give base measurements of a possible prescription and a glaucoma test!. The pretest readings should be confirmed by an extensive exam on the eye chart and other measurements to allow the doctor to ensure the health of your eyes!. The doctor may put drops in your eyes to dilate your pupils and examine the internal and retinal portion of your eyes!. Other tests may be visual field tests and retinal photography!. These are painless and do provide the doctor with an extensive view of your ocular health!. This exam will determine if you need glasses and then you go from there!. Sometimes contact lenses will correct your vision as well!. I guess the bottom line is that you should always protect your eyesight!. If you end up needing glasses or contact lenses to see - get them!. Your eyesight is very important!. You may also find that you don't need glasses at all and the your vision is 20/20!. Good luck!
