There are no "cures" for this, however there are many ways to help correct the problem!. Astigmatism is a secondary correction that's added into your eyeglasses and/or contacts!. Sometimes you only have correction for astigmatism as well!. Most everyone has some sort of correction for it to a certain extent!. Astigmatism is when your cornea is not perfectly round or spherical, its more of a football shape!. The way I explain it to patients is like this: Imagine that you have a clear plastic ball and you cut it in 1/2!. This 1/2 of a sphere represents your eye!. If you hold it up and try to look through it, everything looks okay for the most part!. However, if you squeeze it down into a football shape, and try to look through it, everything suddenly warps!. That is basically what astigmatism is! I live by Nellis AFB and have helped pilots with eyeglasses and contacts!. Your friend may have too high of a correction to pass!. I know they have an Rx requirement but don't know how high that goes!. I would suggest that he see an eye doctor and find out his best routes before jumping into surgery right away!. I'm sure he's wanting this job very badly, but your only given one set of eyes! They may be able to correct him with contacts!. Good luck! Www@Answer-Health@Com

What is Astigmatism!?
In normal, undistorted vision, the cornea (the clear window in front of the eye) is smooth and equally curved in all directions!. With astigmatism, the cornea is "warped", meaning it curves more in one direction than the other distorting or blurring vision for objects at any distance!.

Large amounts of astigmatism are usually inherited, present at birth and frequently remain unchanged throughout life!. Small amounts of astigmatism can be acquired any time in life and are, in fact, very common!. It often does not require correction!.

Treatment
Correction is not difficult if the distortion proceeds across the cornea in a regular direction!. Prescription glasses can often be ordered that neutralize or off set the distortion to the cornea!.

If, however, the distortion is irregular, only reshaping the cornea will correct the problem!. This is usually done through the use of hard lenses or by replacing it with donated human corneal tissue!. While hard lenses are usually better than soft lenses for this correction, some special soft lenses may be helpful to correct mild astigmatism!. Large amounts of astigmatism are not easily corrected with lenses as it may wobble on the uneven surface of the cornea!. In such instances, a special device called a toric lens may be ground with a curve on the back surface which stabilizes the lens on the cornea!.

Both nearsightedness and farsightedness occur when the curvature of the eye is too shallow or deep!. Astigmatism is also a curvature problem, but one part may be deep and another may be shallow!. The eye is warped differently all around!. Look it up on wikipedia!.

As for it being curable, the answer is: maybe!.
The severity varies from person to person, so the only way to know if laser surgery would help is to go and get an exam!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Astigmatisms are pretty common, actually!. Some types of contact lenses and glasses help with them, but they can't be cured!. It's not a disease, it's just a slight abnormality of how the eye moves!. I can't believe he'd be rejected from military selection because of something like that!. It's not that serious!. Have him talk to an optometrist about getting it corrected!. Hope it helps!. : )Www@Answer-Health@Com
