Question: Is bad eye sight caused by genetics!?
I'm extremely near sighted, and have been wearing glasses since I was 11 or 12!.
I'm just curious what causes this, since no one in my family needs glasses except my mom, but she's only needed them since she's gotten into her 50's!.
Am I genetic hiccup, or is it something else!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

I doubt it because more children are developing nearsightedness when BOTH parents are farsighted or have perfect vision- in these cases it is likely to be caused by spending to much time on near work (computer, reading, school/homework) and not taking vision breaks!.
Maybe an extremely, extremely small percentage of nearsightedness is caused by genes but more often than not it is caused by spending to much time focusing on close up objects!.
Also I have heard that glasses used to help see distance can make your vision worse- thats why you should only use them when you need to and remove them for near work!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I think genetics can influence vision!. My mom had normal vision until she developed presbyopia in her 50's!. My father is farsighted with moderate astigmatism and developed presbyopia in his 50's!. My sister has better than normal vision (20/10 last time she was tested)!. I have moderate astigmatism in my left eye and my right eye is normal!.
I have another friend whose parents are both farsighted and she is nearsighted!. I am still puzzled on that one!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Sometimes it's genetic!. sometimes it's just you!. My parents eyes seem fine!.!.!.but my mom is far sighted !.!.!.my dad has diabetes so his eyes get blurry!.!.!.me and my brother are nearsighted!.!.!.except he was born with bad eys!. i just watched way too much tv and read when it was really dim!. I doubt it, up until now - my mum is 47 has both my parents had perfect eyesight - I on the otherhand have stigmatism in both eyes so I doubt genetics play a huge factor, also both my sisters don't wear themWww@Answer-Health@Com
Actually it is!. I have bad eye sight due to my mom's bad eysight!.
She has been warned that one of her children would have bad eye sight as well and twelve years later!.!.!.!.!. BINGO! And that child was me!Www@Answer-Health@Com

It can be genetic and sometimes it cant!. When you get older, your eyes tend to lack vision!. Mostly everyone has to have glasses at some time!.
