I had cataract surgery and they sent me home with an eye patch but mostly for comfort!. I took it off later that night!. The doctor may say just to leave it on until the post-op!. I guess it all has to do with the doctor and how the surgery went!. Good luck :-)

**the doctor told me I could take it off whenever I felt comfortable the night after because it will just come off the next morning anyway!. I've had seven surgeries most which were retinal surgeries and have never had to wear a patch after the first night!. Your eye can in fact get very infected by leaving the dirty patch on that has all of the contents the eye produces after surgery!. Your eye also needs air in order to heal and don't worry the light won't kill it either!Www@Answer-Health@Com

Yes! It protects the eye from getting debris of any kind in it!. It also protects the eye from lights!. After surgery the eye is very sensitive to light!. The eye needs time to heal!. When the doctor feels it's time to remove the patch, he will let your dad know, but do not do this without the doctor's approval!. It's imperative that it stay on! Www@Answer-Health@Com

Yes!. He needs to protect his eye while sleeping for a few days after surgery!. This is also true of newer surgical procedures like LASIK,

Encourage your dad to follow his doctor's instructions,Www@Answer-Health@Com
