Questions about astigmatism for optometrist or anybody else in the know?!

Question: Questions about astigmatism for optometrist or anybody else in the know!?
1!. What's considered mild/ moderate/ high astigmatism!?
2!. I recently had my first eye exam at almost age 26 !. OD +1!.25 x -1!.50 x 105 OS +!.75 x -2!.50 x 85!. The doctor was surprised that I never had glasses!. He says it's not possible that the astigmatism recently developed!. I always knew that my left eye was blurry when looking far, ( but clear near vision) but I thought I had good vision in my right eye, thus good vision overall!. Is that possible!? Or if it's not possible, is it really unusual for such a prescription to only be discovered at age 26!? Is it just that I never knew what good vision is!?He claims that my eyes were accommodating until now for the farsightedness but at my age am now having trouble, mostly from far (if that's possible), and therefore just discovered that I need glasses!. If you understand this or why, please explain!. I'd like more clarification and comments on this matter!. Thanks!
3!. Research says that astigmatism is usually present at birth!. Does this mean that people with astigmatism need glasses from birth!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

Answers:
1) There are no official amounts!.
Anything over 2!.50 might be considered high!.
0!.25 to 0!.75 or 1!.00,where it might be ignored for soft contact lens Rx's might be considered low,
and 1!.00 to 2!.50, the standard range covered by most toric soft contacts, moderate!.
A rough guide!.

2) It would be a little unusual either for that Rx to have gone undetected, or to have rapidly appeared!. It would have been picked up at a routine exam!.
But, again as a rough guide, astigmatism can be considered as causing half the blur of its spherical equivalent!.
And it's not that unusual to discover people with 0!.75 of spherical blur or more that they haven't really noticed!.

3) It depends entirely on the degree, the amount of the astigmatism!.
A significant astigmatic error, left uncorrected in a young child, can leave them able to have good vision *even with the correction* as an adult!. Astigmatic amblyopia!.

4!. An optometrist diagnose astigmatism by doing a refraction (you know!.!.!.the which is better 1 or 2 part of the exam)!. The cylinder portion denotes astigmatism!. It's a normal variation of vision so don't be too worried about it!. Www@Answer-Health@Com
