We're going to the eye doctor today?!

Question: We're going to the eye doctor today!?
I've noticed for the last couple of weeks that it looks like my daughter my have a lazy eye, or is cross eyed!.

We're going to the doctor today for an eye exam and also having her left eye checked out!. I've looked it up on the net and it says that some eye problems can be corrected by glasses, patch and even eye exercises!.

IF she does have a lazy eye or is cross eyed, what can i expect!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

Answers:
If you're seeing a pediatric ophthalmologist, your daughter have a number of brief tests to assess how well she uses her eyes together, her vision in each eye (this can be done with pictures if your daughter doesn't know all of her letters- I can't tell how old she is from your question), and if her eyes cross, the doctor will measure the amount of crossing!. Your daughter should be given eye drops to dilate her pupils, which will allow the doctor to make sure the back of her eyes are healthy and objectively measure her for glasses!.

Some children have eyes that cross in b/c they are farsighted (hyperopia)!. It is like their eye balls are "too short" for the images they want to see to fall on the retina (the back of the eye that turns light into electrical signals that are sent to the brain)!. To see clearly, these children can accommodate, or change the shape of the lens inside their eye to make the light fall on their retina!. When anyone accommodates, it causes our eyes to turn in a bit!. If your daughter has some hyperopia, she may be prescribed glasses to focus the light on her retina for her so she doesn't have to accommmodate/cross her eyes!.

If her vision is different in one eye vs the other she may need to wear a patch over the better seeing eye to make her use the poorer seeing eye!.

If you aren't seeing a pediatric ophthalmologist, you may be referred to one, depending on what is found in your daughter's exam today!. Pediatric ophthalmologists are medical doctors who specialize in working with children and adults with strabismus (crossed, wandering, drifting eyes)Www@Answer-Health@Com

Strabismus is often incorrectly referred to as a lazy eye!. If your daughter's eye is wandering, then it may be strabismus!. A child with strabismus can develop a lazy (amblyopia) if the condition is not treated because the child may favor using the stronger eye over the weaker eye and the weaker eye does not devolop correctly as a result!. An amblyopic eye does not develop clear vision and can't be treated with corrective lenses!.

I have strabismus and was treated with eyeglasses, patching, surgery, and vision therapy!. I feel that the vision therapy was the most successful of all the treatments options!. The doctor will recommend what he/she thinks is best for your daughter!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
