Health Professional? ?!

Question: Health Professional!? !?
Enlarged optic disc!?!?!?!?
ok so been having trouble with my eye, went to eye casualty this morn, doc says i have slightly enlarged optic disc however apart from the pain and blurred vision i have no other symptoms!. (ie!. no problem distinguishing colours or seeing movement) she has said she will refer me to ophthalmologist but will take 4 or 5 weeks for appt to come through!.
does anyone know what could be the cause, the only thing i find when i google is glaucoma!.
i have the option to go private and get seen sooner so if the only thing that causes the enlargement is glaucoma then i don't think i should wait!? so does anyone no of anything else that could cause it!?
thanks!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

An enlarged optic disc could be due to a number of reasons, not just glaucoma!. People who suffer with short sightedness can have a slightly larger disc than others (this is where distant objects are out of focus)!. Like people, the size of the optic disc can vary, there is no exact normal size!. Some people have slightly bigger eyes than others so the optic disc may be slightly larger!. If the retinal pigment around the disc is pale then this could also cause the disc to appear larger than it actually is!.

There are however some serious reasons why an optic disc may be enlarged!. This could be due to inflammation or abnormal swelling caused by a number of things including high blood pressure(malignant), vein occlusion, diabetes, raised intracranial pressure, optic neuritis and more!. As you mentioned, glaucoma is also a factor and can cause a cupping appearance on the disc as the intraocular pressure increases!.

4-5 weeks is a long time to put up with pain and blurred vision and the worry that this could be something serious!. I think you should have been referred as urgent (even though the Dr might not think its an emergency I dont think you should have to put up with this for that length of time) If think its best you are seen privately!. Or you can go and see an optometrist who should be able to give you a bit more info on what this actually is after he/she has examined you!. They can also do immediate referrals to the eye hospital so it might be worth getting a second opinion about this from the next specialist in line! They may on the other hand advise you that you are slightly short sighted and the enlargement is completely normal!. Hope I have helped and good luck at getting it seen to soon!Www@Answer-Health@Com
