Has anyone had Intacs eye surgery?!

Question: Has anyone had Intacs eye surgery!?
I was diagnosed with kerataconus about 5 years ago and have been wearing Gas Permeable contact lenses since!. Glasses are no longer an option (they arent' effective in correcting my vision), and my contacts are too painful to wear!.

I went to an eye surgeon today and he informed me that Intacs inserts or a cornea transplant are my only options!. I was hoping someone in the answer community has had this procedure done and could give me a little more insight before I make the decision!. I don't want a cornea transplant, I'd rather do Intacs!. Anyone have useful information for me!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

Answers:
I have done some research on it, and local practices have had some success with it!. Below I provided some links about the implants!.

Results of Clinical Trials for Intacs for Keratoconus

In 58 keratoconus eyes implanted with Intacs, almost half (25) achieved 20/40 uncorrected vision or better in a study reported in the October 2005 issue of Archives of Ophthalmology!. Studies also have shown that Intacs may be able to reduce vision distortions in individuals with keratoconus who also have developed irregular astigmatism associated with an uneven eye surface!.

In another study, single segment Intacs were found to improve both uncorrected vision and lens corrected vision for LASIK eye surgery patients who developed keratoconus or progressive corneal thinning (ectasia) as a complication!. Single segment Intacs also were found to be more effective than double segment Intacs in the same study reported in the March 2006 issue of American Journal of Ophthalmology!.

Among 28 people included in the post-LASIK study, 37 eyes were treated with either single segment or double segment Intacs!. Each group was matched for factors such as age!. The single segment group averaged about nine lines of uncorrected vision improvement on a standard eye chart, compared with 2!.5 lines in the double segment group!.

INTACS

A method for flattening the cornea that is too steep and making a patient more contact lens tolerant is the insertion of INTACS into the cornea!. This procedure is good for patients who are contact lens intolerant and who want to avoid a corneal transplant and whose K readings are not in excess of 58 Diopters!. It is also useful for individuals with keratoconus who want to improve their present vision with or without contact lenses!. This technique involves the insertion of two arc like plastic segments into the middle of the cornea to flatten the cornea!. This procedure was pioneered 8 years ago in France, and is routinely being done by many cornea specialists in the United States!. It is FDA approved under an HDE protocol and many insurances cover all or part of the cost!. Our center pioneered the use of the Intralase laser for making the channels to insert the plastic segments this makes it a much safer and simpler technique for the patient compared to the mechanical technique which involves using metal blades, our finding have been confirmed by several other large research groups
