Wearing eyeglasses full time to correct astigmatism?!

Question: Wearing eyeglasses full time to correct astigmatism!?
My thirteen year old daughter recently had an eye exam at school and was sent home with a note stating that she failed the exam!. The school nurse recommended scheduling an eye exam!.

My daughter was very hesitant to have the exam so I agreed to have an exam with her at the same time!. She really dreaded wearing eyeglasses!. I found out after the exam that I also needed eyeglasses!. The doctor recommended that both of us wear them full time because both of us had significant amount of astigmatism!. This was a complete surprise to me!.

My prescription

OD +!.25 sph -1!.75 cyl axis 45
OS +!.50 sph -1!.25 cyl axis 170

Her prescription

OD plano -1!.25 cyl axis 180
OS -!.25 sph -1!.00 axis 160

I am trying to set a good example and wear the eyeglasses!. It has been almost two weeks!. I feel like my vision is distorted and magnified!. They also make feel dizzy as well!. My daughter has also complained about similar symptoms!. This really makes me wonder if we should follow the advice of the doctor or seek another opinion!. I called the doctor about the issue and he explained that it would take some time for us to get accustomed to wearing them!. How long does this normally take!? I have been removing the eyeglasses when I use the computer because the effects seem to be even worse when using it!.

Any opinions or advice on what we should do about this situation would be great!. I am not sure how much more I can take!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Answers:
Unless there is something there you've not stated, (such as evidence of astigmatic amblyopia in your daughter: unlikely with that Rx) "all the time" is totally unnecessary!.

You should wear them as much as you and she find them useful!. Up to and including all the time, *if that suits you*!.

I get very fed up with members of my profession getting over-dogmatic on the use of glasses!. Apart from anything else it waters down the force of saying it when we really do need to mean it!.

Your Rt Rx is not massive, but exactly something tricky to get used to!. Especially when you've settled to being without it!.
Sometimes giving the full (and accurate) Rx for such is *not* the right answer!.
Do the glasses actually improve the sharpness of your vision, at least some of the time!?

If not, I'd be beginning to want a re-check!.
And your daughter's Rx might be useful for reading, computer, TV and boardwork, but I see not reason at all, on the information you've given, why she should need to wear it for walking around, or sport!.

Optometrist, retired!.
(1!.75 cyl at 45 degrees in someone habituated to being without it!? Asking for trouble! What were they thinking of!? If they were thinking at all and not just going by the numbers!.)

edit:
"The vision in my right eye appears somewhat slanted but clearer when corrected, however I got really dizzy when I covered my left eye!."

So this may be the correct Rx, technically, but it is a very unfamiliar one!. And especially with the Rt axis of astigmatism diagonal the eye muscles when moving the eye have to shift it a slightly different amount!. This tends to "feel" wrong: it's like learning to walk with a different shoe-heel height (and here two different heel heights!) or getting used to walking on a moving boat, rather than solid land (and rememeber the reverse effect: people with "sea-legs" feel odd at first when back on solid land!.)

The effect occurs less often when the axis of astigmatism is near the horizontal (170, 180, 10!.!.!.) or vertical (80, 90, 100) unless the other eye has a widely different axis direction!.

If this doesn't settle in a week more at most, the benefit of a reduced or removed cyl Rx in that non-dominant right eye should certainly be investigated!. Giving each eye its full Rx and best acuity is only *usually* the best course of action!.

First try using them when you need to!.!.you may find that better than wearing them full time!. Or if you don't like glasses you can try contacts instead!. If you find the glasses annoying when you're at the computer leave them off!.

Good Luck!Www@Answer-Health@Com

Your Rx could be wrong or the lenses could have been made wrong!.

Take them back and have the dr!. check your glasses!.

Typically, you should see out of your glasses as soon as you put them out!. After two week, you definitely should have adjusted to them!.

You could be over/under corrected!. I had a dr!. write my Rx for astigmatism as well and ended up having problems with the glasses!. I go to another dr!. and he doesn't write me a Rx for it and I can see find!.

I recommend that you go back to the dr!. and have him re-check your glasses!. If they match what he wrote, have him re-check both of your eyes!. If nothing comes of that, ask for a refund and go get a 2nd opinion!.

Your eye sight is precious and when you can not see, it messes up your day!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
