Question: Do floaters really mean that your retina is being detached or something like that!?
My optometrist keeps telling me to watch out for floaters and get my eyes checked immediately if I see them!.I've heard that floaters are a bad sign of getting your retina detached!.I've had them since 7 and have grown used to them!.I'm now 16 and it's really starting to worry me!.On my yearly eye exams and my frequent visits he tells me that nothing is wrong with my eyes!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Do you ever see flashes of black on the wall, or flashes of white, also on the wall!. the vitreous humor shrinks and sometimes pulls up the back of the eye, the retina, This is called a detached retina and is a medical emergency!. You need to see an Ophthalmologist immediately, and have your eyes dilated so the doctor can look at the back of the eye, the retina, the macula!. I was watching television and saw a black stripe across the top of the TV screen, I immediately thought I had a detached retina, but it turned out I had had degeneration of the macula, the dry kind, and this had gone wet, meaning abnormal blood vessels were growing in the back of that eye in the macula, and were leaking!.
Had I had a injection of Avastin in that eyeball when this first started, my leaky blood vessels could have been dried up!. But the doctor said my cataract was causing the black stripe and subsequently I lost the central vision in that eye!.
A good way to keep track of your vision is to get an Amsler Grid, ( you can google one) tape it on your fridge and look at it every so often!. There are lines up and down on the gird and a spot in the middle of the grid!. Now if you looked at the spot with first, your left eye closed, then the right, and all the lines look straight to you, and you can see the spot in the middle of the grid, your OK, but should any of the grid lines look curvy, or should you see any blank spots in the middle of the grid, or any other place on the grid, this means something serious is wrong, Call your Doctor immediately!. I give your Optometrist props for telling you to watch out for floaters, he sounds like a very good man!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Lost my central vision in one eye, because I did not go immediately to a good Optometrist!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

When people reach middle age, the gel-like vitreous begins to liquefy and contract!. Some parts of the vitreous form clumps or strands inside the eye!.
The vitreous gel pulls away from the back wall of the eye, causing a posterior vitreous detachment!.
Most spots and floaters in the eye are harmless and merely annoying!. Many will fade over time and become less bothersome!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Having long-term floaters is very common and no particular risk!.
They tend to increase with age for more than one reason!.

A sudden fresh batch of new floaters does need an examination though, because while 98% of cases of such are still essentially harmless, 2% are the early signs of retinal detachment, and an exam is needed to sort those rarer instances out from the others!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
