Mine are -4.50 and my glasses don't look thick, even with the regular lenses. Just avoid picking out a huge frame, as the edges get thicker as the frame/lens gets larger. If possible, choose plastic frames, they are usually better and, some styles being specifically designed to, hide edge thickness. You can get the high index lenses, if you want, but if you pick a relatively small frame, there won't be that much difference in thickness anyway.

Added:

I seem to have started a big arguement whether high index or regular lenses are better. In my particular case, I have plastic frames; at the thickest point, the lenses are just a teensy bit thicker than the frame. The only people ever getting close enough to me to notice this would either be a girlfriend or pickpocket. So, for me, spending the substantial amount of extra money for a marginal improvement in appearance just isn't worth it. I think the asker's situation would be pretty similar. Also, I don't know why there is all the complaining about weight of glasses; for many years, all that was available were glass lenses and somehow people managed to survive. Anyway, I mentioned the high index lenses if the asker thinks they are worth it.

Just to further confuse the issue; another alternative to thick glasses: the asker could probably get contacts.

Added:

I think the problem here is different people have a different opinion of what constitutes "thick glasses". Personally, I don't consider glasses to qualify as "thick" unless there is enough lens sticking out the back side of the frame as to be "readily seen and precieved as thick, under casual observation".

1.61 hi-index lenses are perfect for that power.

They will be at least 40% thinner than a regular lens, and a lot lighter also.

Flying Dragon really needs to try hi-index and he will realize there is a lot more difference than he thinks. - 4.50 in regular lenses, even in a small frame is nuts.

EDIT ***

The thinner high index lens isn't only for looks, it will also reduce edge distortion , meaning, better vision and a wider field of view.

I agree with footprinz - hi index is fantastic. I remember what my glasses were like before hi index came out and there is no comparison.

you can use hi-index glass which are very thin or you can use lenses instead of specs

I agree with Flyng Dragon, plus hi index are more expensive than regular ones, :-)
