Why is my eye red and pupil enlarged?!

Question: Why is my eye red and pupil enlarged?
About a week ago my eye turned very red and it looks like it's not getting better even after some eyedrops. Furthermore, my pupil in the same eye has enlarged to twice the size of the "normal" eye. The pupil seems to not be perfectly round like the left eye. As if it was "drooping" or oval. What causes this and is this cause for concern?

Answers:

Go to the optometrist (eye doctor). NOW.

Since we can't actually see your eye in person or get a detailed history on the problem, it may be nothing at all. But a red eye and a mid-dilated pupil are two signs of angle-closure glaucoma which is vision-threatening and can lead to blindness. Or it could be anything in-between those two things.

We can't help you here with this on the internet.

It is better to be safe than sorry. Get to an optometrist. ASAP Call them and tell them what is going on. This is an emergency and they will get you in today.

I am an optometry intern.
