Glasses are a few centimeters away from the eye, shouldn't they be stronger for that reason?

Do you have just one prescription , and he told you it was for both ?...if so , the one you have is for glasses.At that power, contacts would be 0.50 weaker in both eyes.
It depends where you are also...some places, like Canada, there is no such thing as a contact prescription. You take your glasses prescription to an optician and they will do the conversion necessary for the power.
