Question: What exactly is astigmatism? (Please no scientific/complicated answers, I need to understand it)?
What exactly is astigmatism? (Please no scientic/complicated answers, I want to actually be able to understand what you're explaining.)
I went to my eye doctor today and he said I have astigmatism in both eyes. It's fine for now but eventually in a few years I will need glasses. :(
He also said that I have to be very careful while driving at night since I have this?

What exactly IS this?
I failed to ask him while I was in his office, although I should have.

Answers:

If you look at your eyes in the mirror, you see the whites of the eyes, and you see the round coloured centre. Covering this coloured centre is a round clear dome... that bulges forward.

If this dome is perfectly round like a soccer ball... then you DON'T have astigmatism.
If this dome is 'squashed' like a football.. then you have astigmatism.

Astigmatism doesn't blur your vision very much, it just distorts your vision.. and your brain can 'work' harder to figure out what the shapes/letters are.

At night, it distorts streetlights and headlights... so instead of it looking round, it becomes like a line.. or a stretched star/oval.

I hope this was simple enough.

It is an irregular shape of the cornea. Like it might be too flat, too steep, the angle is wrong. A lot of people have it, and many people have mild astigmatism that don't raise any major concerns. A week ago my doctor said I developed it. :( Basically, I have blurrier vision in that eye, even with glasses. Mine isn't that severe though, but it is noticeable, so now I'm wearing special contact lenses that make me see better than normal.

Compare a regular window to them block windows they put in some places, like rec centre showers. Them brick windows are wavy and when you look throught them everything is messed up.
Astigmatism is when your eye surface is wavy like that.

Astigmatism is when your cornea( transparent part that basically covers your pupil and iris) is shaped irregularly. Here is a site that goes into more detail if you want.
