Is it safe to wear contacts?!

Question: Is it safe to wear contacts?
I'm a 13 year old girl and I've been wearing glasses since I was 9. For two years I've been asking my mom if I could get contacts but she says it's not good for my eyes. I don't understand why. I don't think they can cause damage to my eyes, I don't want colored ones 'cause I like my eye color. I just want them so I can stop wearing my glasses. I think they make me look bad, 'cause when I look in the mirror and I don't have them I think I'm pretty but when I'm wearing them I think I'm ugly. I want your opinions. Are they going to cause damage to my eyes? 'Cause if they don't maybe I can convince my parents.

Answers:

Looking back I began using contacts for sports. Glasses were difficult to wear and etc...

but yes there are some things that contacts can do to your eyes

actually just yesterday I went in for a contact fitting because I needed new ones.
I need to understand how long to wear them...if you overuse them they can make your prescription (how bad your eyes are) worse.

Cleaning is a pain in the butt. You need to clean them all the time.
They irriatate more.
Because they are directly in your eye they can cause more severe problems

No Sleeping in Contacts. My uncle slept in them once and...your eyes roll to the back of your head...and he had to go to the ER the next morning.

Overall Contacts do have problems, its just learning how to use them properly...basically reponsiblity etcetc you know...but they are so convenient.

Glasses since I was 7
Contacts since I was 12
I'm 18

I've been wearing contacts for five years now, every day. I've never had problems with them. Just don't forget to take them out every evening, and put them in clean product. And always wash your hands.

They are safe unless you neglect to take them out and maintain them properly.

I wore contacts for years before having corrective surgery (lasik)... they dont damage your eyes particularly but you do need to be very careful with them... 13 is kind of young I think but if you are responsible then it could work for you... you should start by calling your eye doctor or setting up an appointment with them to see if you can even wear them... there are certain stipulations they have as well ...so before you go crazy make sure its an option. If it is you eye doctor can probably speak w/your parents too.

There are alot of types of contacts and expense that goes with them... I used to forget to take them out b/c some nights I'd read and fall asleep with them in or watch tv and pass out on the couch...they get dry and can hurt, they can get suctioned to your eye which is no fun either.... also if your nails are long putting them in and taking them out could be an issue. I am not knocking contacts at all...I hated wearing my glasses and felt the same way as you trust me... I get it. I got glasses in 6th grade and had them til i was a senior in high school. I started with ones you put in and took out every night but since I forgot more often then not I changed to overnight ones that you could leave in for a week at a time.... I had acrylic nails put on for my prom and cut my eye trying to put them in...it hurts I couldnt even go in sunlight it was awful so just be careful. Once your eyesight evens off and stays same for a couple years you could look into corrective surgery. I had that when I was 26, I had just had my daughter and didnt want to deal w/contacts or glasses with the midnight feeding and diaper changes lol... Best decision of my life.........at any rate the main thing is to keep them clean and be responsible.........good luck.
