First pair of glasses..problems?!

Question: First pair of glasses..problems?
Ive just got my first pair of glasses. Im to use them for driving, long distance and anything fiddly. When i was in the opticians i tryed them on and as soon as i had them on..it was blurry. The lady explained that when you've never worn glasses before that it takes ur eyes sometime to get used to them. Ive been wearing them for about 2-3 hours now. When ever i try to look at something it takes me a few seconds to focus in/realign my vision (if that makes sense) then when i look at something else i have to refocus. Also things look misshapen. For e.g looking at my computer monitor it seems to be leaning towards me rather than sat on the desk straight.
Another problem im having is when looking at things i find it hard to see as my eyes are being reflected into the glass. This makes the glasses look smudged/dirty all the time.Is this normal? If it is i may just forget the glasses. This may look slightly blurry without them but its easier to see.

take them back, ive had ones that were slightly out on one lense and the symtoms are similar.try contacts trial,i did and stuck with them.

Think they may have either got your prescription wrong or put the wrong lenses on your frames. Go back to the opticians and ask them to check.
If you have your prescription you could take it and your glasses to another optician and ask them to check for you.

Thats not right - take them back!

Without knowing what your actual correction is, it is hard to specify why you are having issues. It could be a number of reasons besides just getting used to them. Most people who get glasses have that wow factor, how much clearer everything is. Sometimes it is clearer, but feels a bit strange which can be an adjustment with the brain, not so much your eyes adjusting. You may have a fair amount of astigmatism which can cause things to appear slightly angled too and perhaps only in one eye if one looks good and the other seems odd.

Give them at least a week of solid wear and after that if it hasn't improved, call the doctor that did the exam and explain your visual concerns. They should have you come back and they can re-test you to see if something needs to be altered.

You could also try the opticians again to see if there is a necessary adjustment in the frame. In some cases it is the angle in which the frame sits. At the very least, they should double check the glasses to be sure they were made correctly, (prescription and pupillary measurement) before just telling you to get used to them.

**edit: While I thank Hippo for agreeing to some degree, I do take exception to the statement that "opticians are known to get prescriptions wrong". Any optician with integrity will provide you with the best quality eyewear they can. Believe me, I have seen my fair share of crap made at chain opticals that really made me upset. If a lab makes a mistake then it is up to the optician to catch it before it reaches the customer and should be rejected. There certainly is a possibility that the glasses could have been off, which is why I suggested having them double checked, but also a real possibility that you could adjust to the Rx.

I'd add to what TEK33 has to say that things are to some extent misshapen if you wear glasses. This is because your vision is only perfect when you are looking straight ahead. If you have contacts this is not the case and its one of the reasons I prefer contacts. Over time your brain adjusts to the way things look with glasses and normally the clarity makes up for the distortion.

Looking into glass used to be a problem but is mostly fixed these days by anti-glare coats which make a huge difference. I recognize what you are talking about and remember how great it was to get anti-glare coats.

I think your issues with getting used to thenm are quite extreme. I'd tend to give it 72 hours and then get back to the optician. They are known to get perscriptions wrong or the labs not get teh perscription or setup of the frames qutie right. This can be a particular problem if you have astigmatism.

it sounds to me like you might have astigmatism and that one takes some getting used to the glasses.
Persevere.
Do NOT take them off.
You will adjust, much quicker if you leave them on then if you take them off.
If after a week, then go back to the optician because it is not totally out of the realm of possibility that the eye glass maker made a mistake.
It happened to my husband and he too was a new eye glass wearer and about went nuts till it was discovered there really was a problem with the lenses and not just him complaining and having difficulty adjusting.
