Are RGP contact lenses worth it?!

Question: Are RGP contact lenses worth it?
i want to get contact lenses, but my dad is not wanting me to get then because of the price tag on replacements. I did some research and found that RGP lenses are more expensive at first, but last much longer then soft lenses. By my question is, is it really worth the adjustment time?

And to add I have an astigmatism which raises the price further. So I am interested in suggesting RGP lenses to my dad. I am 14 by the way.....

Answers:

RGP used to be the only lenses available so I had them at 13. At the time I found them wonderful and wore them for 20 years until my perscription became available in soft lenses. Be aware that the adjustment time can be quite painful and varies considerably from person to person. Some people do give up. Also if you can't wear lenses for a few days because you're ill/got a cold etc. then you have to adjust again although its not as bad as teh first time.

Expense is a very difficult thing to assess. Remember that with RGP contacts you may lose them or break them. ITs considerably easier to knock out an RGP lens than a soft lens ,drop them taking them in /out /break them whilst cleaning them. We used to have cheap insurance policies to cover this, but that isn't available these days. Also if you scratch them badly it affects your vision. They can be polished to some extent but it affects comfort.

Soft lenses are far more comfortable than hard lenses even after the adjustment time. You are always awaer of hard lenses. RGP lenses have more problems if you are out and there is a cloud of dust which gets behind the lens. That doesn't happen with soft lenses. Daily soft lenses you can swim in. I have swum in RGP lenses but if you put your face in teh water/there are waves you risk losing them from your eyes. For astigmatism soft lenses now come in torics. These rely on the lens spinning in your eye to the rigth position and having dry eyes can upset this although drops help. In theory RGP lenses give clearer vision for astigmatism but I didn't find this the case in practice as its very difficult to keep hard lenses dust and scratch free and they tend to mist over at some point in teh day. Cleaning them is very much more difficult . Once I had soft I never considered going back to RGP lenses although I had always thought them wonderful. Some people with very high perscriptions need RGP lenses but if you dont' I doubt they actually work out cheaper unless you never lose or damage one.

If the money is an issue you could get dailies and only use as many as your dad is happy to pay for - not ideal but better than nothing.
