swimming with contact lenses....?!

Question: Swimming with contact lenses....?
I am about to get contacts next week. During the summer, I am constantly swimming, wakeboarding, and wakesurfing. Is it ok to wear contacts while swimming or doing water sports?

You run the risk of losing them.

I've swum in mine for 40 years - like you during teh summer I don't stay out of the water and have sailed and snorkelled in mine. What you have to be careful about is infection. I use dailes if I'm swimming so I can throw them away at the end of the day. I use fortnightlies otherwise but reserve dailes for swimming. In 40 yeas I've never lost a lens swimming - this is an often stated risk but I've capsized dinghies in heavy seas when I had RGP lenses and not lost them.

The only type of contacts that you should use when swimming or water sports are daily disposable lenses. Since you will be discarding them you don't have to worry about infections. Reusing a lens after exposure to water can lead to very serious infections and should never be done. Some daily disposables fit better than others so ask your optometrist about different options.

I am an optometrist.
