As a brief summary generally Asigmatism can have 2 different causes:
1. On the front of your eye (over the coloured part - your Iris) is your Cornea. Sometimes this can be slightly 'rugby ball' shaped as opposed to completely round like a football. All this means is that light rays are bent slightly differently by different parts of your cornea. This can be corrected easily by glasses or contact lenses. A person with Astigmatism requires 2 different prescriptions in front of the affected eye in order to see sharply - if you have a copy of your prescription to hand you can see what I mean. You will have a number under the 'Sphere' (SPH) box, this is your correction for long (+ve prescription) or short (-ve prescription) sight, next to this you will have a number under the 'Cylinder' (CYL) box, this is the additional correction required to correct your astigmatism. These 2 prescriptions have to be set a specific way round in your glasses/contact lenses and that is indicated by the number in the 'Axis' box.
2. Asigmatism can also be caused by the lens inside your eye. It is situated behind your Iris (the coloured part). If this is not sat exactly straight (ie. slightly tilted) then this will result in an astigmatic prescription.
It is fairly common for your astigmatism to be a combination of 1 and 2.
Hope this helps?

I means that the light entering your eyes cannot be focused on the retina without lenses that correct for the astigmatism that is present.

It means you can't see clearly without glasses.
It doesn't have anything to do with footballs and basketballs.

Try a dictionary.
As you can see from the other answers, it's to do with shape of your eye, rubbish, you wont get a good answer on here, Go back to your optician and ask for a better explanation.

Yeah i think it refers to the shape of the eye. Anyway, no big deal, I have one in my left eye. Glasses compensate for this. Contact lenses don't unless you pay extra for the astigmatism ones

Basically, your eyeball has more the shape of a rugby ball than a football. My husband has astigmatism and that's how the optician explained it to him
