In a contact lens exam, do they touch your eye? Also, hard or soft?!

Question: In a contact lens exam, do they touch your eye? Also, hard or soft?
I am a teen and I really want contacts, because my glasses hide my ice-blue eyes. I am kind of scared of a contact lens exam, because my mom said they have to touch your eye. But the last time she got a contact exam was probably 20 years ago. Also, I have dry eyes and I play basketball and volleyball. Should I opt for hard or soft lenses? Thanks for your answers! :)

I have had my contacts for 40 years and never had my eye touched by an optician. However their fingers will come very close to your eye as they put the contact in for you so it may feel like that. Just remind yourself its only teh contact which is going to touch your eye and teh optician is really experienced. What they do is try a contact in your eye, give you an eye test and then look at the way the contact moves in your eye with a special instrument. It takes quite a while teh first time and the optician may try more than one set. When they take teh lenses out again they will come near your eye but not touch it. I know its not nice to have someone else put a finger near your eye, but they are professionals.

Now the optician will probably recommend a lens type for you based on your perscription , fit etc. Hard lenses used to be the only lenses available but are more uncommon these days as they have many disadvantages. Some perscriptions though are only available in hard lenses; I had to wait some years till mine came out in soft lenses so I have worn both.

Hard lenses have to be worn in over a period of time and they are uncomfortable to painful while you are doing this. If you don't wear them for a couple of days you have to work up your wearing time again. Dust clouds outside can get behind the lens. if you drop them and lose them it can be expensive, they are a fiddle to clean and keep dust off. Having said that I successfully wore them for 20 years and thought them great. Soft lenses however are massively more comfortable. There is no period of having to wear them in and no problem if you dont' wear them for a couple of days. Dust is far less prone to get behind them and rub and because they are disposable if you lose one its not such an issue. There are various sorts of disposable, daily, fortnightly and monthly. I use daily for swimming so I can throw them out afterwards and otherwise fortnightly which are great although I used to wear monthly. Using soft lenses these days is for the majority of people the best option,. Some of the choice is down to money - have you discussed this with your mother?

Dry eyes can be a problem for lenses - hard or soft. This is something the optician will look at. Contacts have special eyedrops and its a good idea to get a bottle of these to rewet teh lenses whilst they are in your eye. Try and look at why your eyes might be dry - computer screens dont' help, but not drinking enough water doesn't either. Playing basketball and volleyball is the sort of thing lenses are ideal for - I've played many sports using lenses and when I first got them in school I couldn't believe the difference tehy made. I've done various sports in both hard and soft lenses and I don't think there is a particular advantage ot either. It can be easier to knock hard lenses out of your eye, soft lenses hardly ever fall out, but I've never had it happen to me playing sport. Only had problems with young children knockign them out.
