Can you help me make sense of this?!

Question: Can you help me make sense of this?
We just came back from the eye doctors, and I was told my son needs glasses. I'm just curious as to what the abbreviations mean in regards to what his eyesight is. The optometrist said he doesn't need a strong prescription, but didn't elaborate more than that.
Sphere
OD and OS are both PLANO
Cylinder
OD: -0.50
OS -0.50
Axis
OD 010
OS 170.

Google has popped up with saying that PLANO is just plain lenses, no prescription in them. But that doesn't make sense, since he told me he needed them? Thanks for helping me sort this out :)

Answers:

The Mom has most of it right, except that one eye isn't worse than the other. They are identical.

The only difference is 20 degrees in the axis, which has nothing to do with one eye being better or worse, no matter what the axis is. (010 - 170 is only 20 degrees)

He has mild astigmatism in both eyes. Nothing serious, but he does see a bit out of focus without that correction.

You say Google came up with Plano being lenses with no power, but you were ignoring the other numbers.

The prescription represents how the eye is focusing on the image. The Sphere part tells if you are nearsighted or farsighted. Plano means your son is neither. The measurement in the cylinder tells if there is an astigmatism, and the amount of it there is. Astigmatism is due to the shape of the eye itself, where the near/farsightedness is a problem with the lens inside the eye. In this case, your son has a mild astigmatism. That will affect his ability to focus horizontally and vertically at the same time. The axis tells you about the direction of the astigmatism, and will be expressed in degrees up to 180. 180 is perfectly horizontal. In his case, the astigmatism is much worse in his right eye than his left. This type of eye problem will cause difficulty reading or focusing on some letters. For instance, capital G and C will look a lot alike, as will the O and D. He may be able to force the focus for a while, but the difference between the two eyes will mean he gets headaches and has trouble fairly quickly. He needs the glasses to read, but not to just walk around. Depending on how old he is, he may outgrow the need as he gets older and puberty growth happens. On the other hand, it may stay the same, or even increase. Think of it as that his eyes are not round, they are kind of egg shaped. It's a natural variation, none of our eyes are perfectly round. Some are just less round than others.
