non-prescription color contacts -- do I have to see an eye doc first?!

Question: Non-prescription color contacts -- do I have to see an eye doc first?
Do I still have to go in and see an eye doctor before purchasing non-prescription color contacts? A friend of mine has 2 unopened, never-been-used color contacts she is going to give me, I'd like to try them on right away, but should I see an eye doctor first?

I've never worn contacts, always glasses. I also have astigmatism, but from my understanding the worst thing that can happen with that is that my eyes will "spasm" and the contacts will flop out.

I don't want to wear them every day for hours at a time, just once in a while for a couple hours tops.

Three words - YES.

Actually a few more...
Yeah.. wear them... then after you develop an eye infection, and possibly go blind, you can sue your friend for distributing a medical instrument without a legal prescription....

Hmm sounds far fetched??? This actually happened to 2 girls (going blind.. not the suing part...).. one in New Zealand... and one In Australia... They're both waiting for someone with compatible corneas.... to die so that they can get the donor corneas for transplant.... All because they wore their friend's coloured contact lens to a party one night!!!

If you are in the US, technically, you are supposed to have a proper exam & fitting, (even for the contacts that only change eye color). If your friend just gives you some contacts, how do you know if they will fit your eyes? I'm certain you will probably wear them anyway, but, if you can possibly scrape together enough money, it would be best to get a real exam and contacts that actually fit your eyes.

that isn't the worse thing that can happen. Think of shoes. If you just borrowed a set from your friend would they rub your feet into blisters because they didnt' fit properly? They might not do if you are reasonably the same size but if they aren't they could be very uncomfortable. Imagine the equivalent on your eye. Also if they are too tight then your eye gets deprived of oxygen and that is VERY dangerous for your eyesight. don't risk this. Its illegal to supply lenses without an opticians fitting in both teh UK and US for very good reason.
