Paying for glasses: advice needed?!

Question: Paying for glasses: advice needed?
I had my eye test by the locum optician last year and bought my pair of glasses. However few days later i was not happy with the prescription. I asked for re-test. This was done by my regular optician and she told me that my prescription was not changed from the previous year. I ask for a refund as (a) i didn't need a new glasses in the first place (b) it broke twice in a week. However they refuse to give my money back but instead they gave me a credit note. So i went this year for check up and needed a new pair of glasses. So i purchased it. I paid it with their credit note they gave me last year. I asked if i can have receipt but they said he can't give me a receipt since it is not a new purchase. I told him i need a receipt and as it is a new purchase. Do you think they have been unreasonable?

I'm glad they gave you a credit note. A lot of opticals have a no refund policy, because it's not like they can just resell that particular prescription cut into those particular frames to anyone else. And they can't just put those frames back out on their sales floor for someone else to buy, especially if they came back to them having broken twice. So from a business standpoint, it is really a hard thing to 'return' and get money back, because it costs an optical a lot to make your glasses and not get paid anything for them (which is essentially what happens when they return your money)
However, it is a poor business practice and poor customer service to not issue a receipt, even if there was no 'money' exchanging hands. However, its they way they want to do business, so you there isn't much you can do. I don't think it is unreasonable for you to expect a receipt. But the bottom line is, you've spent your credit and now you don't have to go back there ever again!
