Do computers damage you eyesight?!

Question: Do computers damage you eyesight?
What can you do prevent damage? Is it because the lighting is too bright? Should there always be a light in the background?

Any close work for long period of time such as TV's, computers and reading books can cause your eyesight to deteriorate.

The best way to prevent this is from looking away regularly (every ten minutes look at something for ten seconds) and blinking frequently.

If you want to make you eyesight better eye exercises are meant to help your eyes drastically, especially the bates method. I will list a website below giving more information on the bates method and eye exercises. I hope it helps :)

Yes, always have lights on around you while using a computer. Don't use your computer in a dark room, the contrast between bright and dark can damage your eyesight. Also try to cut down on glare. Don't use your monitor facing a very bright windo.

Also, don't use it for too long without looking at things that are far away. About every 20 minutes or so, focus your eyes on something far across the way, to exercise your vision. Do that for at least a couple minutes or so.

Viewing computer monitors and televisions can cause your eyes to feel dry because you blink less often when you are concentrating on something close. Blink a few times and this is fixed.

It will not do any permanent damage. Whether you are nearsighted or farsighted is determined by the shape of the lens of your eye and the distance from the lens to your retina. Both of these are genetically determined, and nothing that you do (other than surgury to change the shape of your lens) will change that.

Yes they cause nearsightedness (far away things get blurry). The exact cause is unknown. Generally those who go outside are less likely to develop nearsightedness, and those who do indoor things are more likely to get it. Speculation on the reason getting out helps includes sunlight, looking at far away things, and dopamine from engaging in activities. Some recommend getting up from your computer every once in a while to look at far away things. It's also good to take breaks to stretch, walk around, etc. for other reasons.

EDIT: IIRC all the light/dark/etc. stuff is a myth and only causes temporary eye strain (eye tiredness).

Yes they do... and there is something called Computer Vision Syndrome. Here are some things that you can do to help.

1.Make sure your workstation, whether on the job or at home, is set up ergonomically

2. Eliminate glare in your work area

3. Adjust your screen brightness/contrast controls and use a larger text size

4. Take a break - at least once an hour for about 10 minutes and blink frequently

5. Stay healthy - drink water frequently. beta-carotine-rich foods, such as carrots are good for maintaining eye health.

Glossy screens are the worst for eyes, on the other hand, the soothing matte finish, although not as appealing as shiny screens, is much much better and easier on your eyes.

When the last CRT finally rolled off the line, that's when the LCD makers decided to go cheap and not apply the matte film to LCD panels.

Now we all suffer again.
