If I started wearing my contact lenses when I was 13, how old would I be when I !

Question: If I started wearing my contact lenses when I was 13, how old would I be when I can't wear them anymore?
my doctor said that later on in life i won't be able to wear them anymore because my body won't produce tears anymore when i put them on, but when will that be?

Answers:

I started at 13 and I've worn contacts for 40 years and am still wearing them.

As you get older your eyes can produce less tears so you have to use drops more but many people dont' even get this. There is no evidence that wearing contacts stops you producing tears, its just if your eyes get very dry you have problems with contacts. In 40 years time you'll probably find a whole set of new things anyway. When I first had contacts you could only get hard, and they were incredibly new and few people had them ( thanks parents for finding out about them and getting them for me).

It is always possible that you will have problems later in life that will stop you wearing lenses, but it isn't a certainty. Providied you follow the rules, are careful with hygiene and dont' overwear there is no reason you shouldn't be wearing them for decades.

Your doctors a fruitcake.
Things do tend to dry up with age but you will still have tears and you can buy tears type drops for contacts while you wear them.

You will need to get new scrips as time goes on.

You will probably find as you get older vanity issues are replaced by things that are more important.

I wear glasses at work as they do give better vision and contacts if I'm out as I like to dance etc and that is better without them.

Glasses may meet your needs better when you get in your forties and need bifocals. Probably sometime in your seventies or eighties, you will lose the dexterity you need in your fingers to handle contacts. It has not been my experience that starting contacts sooner will mean you need to get out of them sooner.

I've never heard of that, and I've worn contacts for almost 20 years. maybe you just need to switch to a gas permeable lens, it allows air to flow through the lens to reach the surface of your eye. I'd check with another eye doctor on this one.
