My sister had to wear one when she had an eye surgery and she would be in pain any time that we would turn on a light, even though she was wearing the blindfold. This is because your eye needs more time to adapt to the level of light since there is a bigger difference. That's why it hurts for a few seconds when you turn on a light during the night, or when you go from regular lightening inside to bright sun outside.
However, if your symptoms persist during the day, you should definitely see an optometrist.
