Does your optometrist ask you to squint?!

Question: Does your optometrist ask you to squint?
When ever I go to my optometrist and I say I can't read something, she says "try really really hard, as hard as you can", and then I try and I always end up with glasses that I have to squint with to see small writing. I'm tired of having to read large print books, or else have to squint.

Does your optometrist do that?

Answers:

First of all if you can squint and see better, it probably means that you could probably be prescribed glasses that will make you see better. Now I will tell you what I would mean if I asked you to try harder to read a line. There are people who hate being wrong so much that they will not try things where they might be wrong. These patients might come in and read the 20/30 line with ease but not want to even try to read the 20/25 line. To get an accurate representation of how well they can see, I might encourage them to keep reading lower on the chart until they miss letters. I would not want my patients to squint, just attempt to read letters they are less than certain of.

If you're unhappy, get a second opinion. Go to a different optometrist.

And no, I have been to several eye doctors over the years, have worn glasses for 8 years on a daily basis, and I have never been asked to squint.
