Are retinal tears time-sensitive problems?!

Question: Are retinal tears time-sensitive problems?
My coworker told me he had one for 9 years before it got diagnosed! I did research and it seems like they are time-sensitive? Anyone know the truth?

Answers:

Most retinal tears are time sensitive and need urgent treatment (within hours) because of the risk for retinal detachment. If the retina detaches due to the tear allowing fluid under the retina, it needs to be fixed within hours or the vision may not be restored where it has detached.

Now you can be lucky and have a small tear in a location that doesn't end up in a detachment and have it just stay that way. My question though: if it wasn't diagnosed, how can he know he has had it for 9 years??
