What do tears specifically do?!

Question: What do tears specifically do?
I touched my eye and just remembered that I played basketball. If you play basketball, you know that the ball and ground that you occasionally fall on are very dirty. I can't make myself cry, but I teared up. The tears just stayed on my eye and went away. If tears cleanse your eyes, do they have to run out of your eyes, or do they clean your eyes and somehow go back into your eyes? What do they do? I just hope my eye doesn't have bacteria all over it.

they release an enzyme to make you feel better

Usually when they go away they evaporate, they don't get absorbed back into your eye...tears are mostly salt so they dry out pretty quickly. Whatever dirt you got in your eye probably washed out onto your face near your eye, then got left on your skin when the liquid in your tears evaporated.

They are not tear drops rather then just your eyes rehydrating themselves, and I think they go back in through your puples :p

tears get dust, dirt and so fourth out of your eye and keeps your eyes wet.
