How Often Should You Get Your Eyes Checked?!

Question: How Often Should You Get Your Eyes Checked?
I remember I got them checked when I was a very small child, I am 14 now. Would it be weird to get a random check up? I have some vision issues but they aren't really all that bad nor do I want to get it checked for a special reason and find out nothing is wrong and feel embarrassed.
:)
Thank You.

Oh, you should definitely get them checked! I think your actually supposed to get them checked every year... And even if your eyes are perfectly fine, you shouldn't feel embarrassed, just glad you don't have to wear goofy glasses!

But yeah, I thought I had perfect vision until my mum took me to the Opticians when I was around ten. It turns out I'm mildly-or-a-bit-more-so short-sighted (which explains all of the times when I couldn't read the board at school).

You should have an annual eye exam every 1-2 years, depending on your age. I see more and more optometrists, however, moving to every 1 year. It is not bad for you to go every year, since they aren't just checking your eyesight, but also checking the overall health of your eye.

I met a lady who came to see the optometrist I work next to come in who was 50 years old and had never had an eye exam. The doctor checked her eyes, and found out a cataract was forming.

Optician

The American Academy of Ophthalmology recommends getting a comprehensive eye exam every two years between the ages of 3 - 19. Therefore, there is nothing to be embarrassed about. Once you've had the exam, your eye doctor may recommend more frequent exams. Once your vision has stabilized, usually somewhere in your early twenties, your eye exams can be cut back to every 4 or 5 years. As we reach out 40s, your eyes should be examined annually.

Norm in the UK is once every 2 years if you wear glasses and your perscripton is stable. I've been on 2 yearly checkups adn also on 6 monthly ones once when the optician wasn't happy about something. There is nothing wrong in askign to have your eyes checked and no need to feel embarrassed if nothing is wrong.

In the UK we dont' go as much for checkups as you do in the US so its in'st normal for people to have physcials and eye tests every year.

Your eyes need a check up, just as you (hopefully) have a GP that you go to every year for a physical. If you're not having any problems, once a year is good. If you are having "issues," as you said, you need to have them checked out. Would you rather go to the optometrist and get a clean bill of health on your eyes, or find out that you should have gone in earlier because there is a problem that should have been treated sooner? We take our eyesight for granted. I learned the hard way when I got an infection and found out I could have lost my vision in one eye. I went in to the ER immediately, but it left some permanent scarring on my cornea so my vision in that eye will never be quite the same again. I always seem to write long answers LOL but what I'm saying is there is NOTHING to be embarrassed about by going to your eye doc and finding out nothing is wrong. :)

You should definately get your eyes checked annually. You should go and get your eyes checked. Nothing to be embarrassed about if they find nothing wrong. It's better to be safe then sorry.

every two years normally then more regularly if there are eyesight problems
