Reading glasses without a prescription?!

Question: Reading glasses without a prescription?
As I don't have much money I always buy my reading glasses ready-made from a shop. When they break or get lost I buy a new pair. I haven't had my eyes tested. The frames are usually made from cheap plastic or metal. I have now the idea to buy some designer frames cheaply from ebay (Versace, Gucci that sort of thing). Can I then get an optician to make me a pair of reading lenses to fit like the ones I buy(ie. 2.5) or do I have to have an individual prescription made from an eye test? Many thanks.

You will need an eye test first.

If the frame you get is ophthalmic grade, meaning suitable to hold Rx lenses, then yes ,lenses can be made for it. However, they cannot just duplicate the numbers in your cheapies, You would need a proper eye test and then the lenses would be made accordingly.

In the long run that may not be a bad idea anyway. The cheapies have the same correction in each eye, but many people have a difference between their eyes requiring specific correction. That can give you better vision and longer reading time as your eyes won't get fatigued as quickly.

For short term use cheapies are fine for looking at mail, shopping, etc. but for any long term use, the right correction with the right pupillary distance will make a big difference especially when your near requirements get stronger over time.

Reading vision is only 1 (small) part of the eyes... have you considered that your eye is aging and can develop diseases like Cataracts, Glaucoma, Diabetic Eye Disease... and Macula Degeneration?

Why is it that you would get your car regularly serviced, and not have your eyes checked regularly?
Perhaps one day, your car will work fine, but your blindness won't allow you to drive.

Have an eye exam, get an Rx, get them made into your Frames that you bought on eBay... coz, if your optician duplicated the 'el-cheapos' [+2.50's..etc], the lenses will cost the same as proper Rx anyhow.

reading glasses from the shop may not be as accurate a perscription as one an optician can get for you. Opticians also check the health of your eyes. They will want to do an eye test to make up a perscription intio the frames you have chosen. However I'd say that even if money is short surely your eyes are a priority and it would be best to spend the money on having them checked.

Most opticians will only put lenses into frames that they supply. If you need reading glasses then you are at an age when an eye test would be a really good idea - although problems are rare it could possibly save you sight. You are short of £20 ? A pair of Guccis on ebay would be more than this. Look after your health. If all that turns up is the usual need for reading glasses then you can think again.

stick with the cheap glasses last time I had some made MESCOS there were 80 pounds they arrived not the ones picked had to wait another two weeks and afterwards broke with a designer pair you could lose them have them stolen or brake them lots of opticians will make a charge even if they will put the lenses in they will try to talk you into buying from them its how they are
