My contacts burn when I put them in?!

Question: My contacts burn when I put them in?
I have been wearing contacts for over a year, except today when I put my contacts in they started BURNING! I couldn't bear the pain it was giving me, so I threw them away (I have daily disposables) and waited for a while, washed my hands, and put a contact in my left eye. It did the same thing, but it wasn't as bad, so I was able to bear it this time. I decided I would try putting in he right contact, but it burned like hell. I decided to just bear it as long as possible and eventually it stopped burning. After a while, it did go away. I would say about 15 minutes after I put it in it felt better. Also, I noticed turning the lights off made it feel better (but not much at all..) and same thing for applying a cold rag to the outside of my eye. Does anyone know what is causing the burning? Thanks.

Even if you have washed your hands carefully you can get residue on them which isn't washed off. if you are right handed its often your right hand which gets more contaminated. Worst I've ever had with this was when I chopped chilles and although I had washed my hands 3 times and used a scrubbing brush , next time i put my contacts in they burnt like hell. Took me 3 days to get burn free wearing.

The solution that the manufacturer ships them in can vary in ingredients. While all are "safe" some may bother you more than others, even though it is the same batch of lenses. Buy some saline or a multipurpose contact lens solution that you know does not bother you and rinse the lenses before inserting them. This should solve the problem.

It's possible you are allergic to the solution the manufacturer keeps the lenses in. Try soaking the lenses in a contact solution you are not allergic to for a couple hours, then try again.
