The outside of my iris (on both eyes) are turning gray.?!

Question: The outside of my iris (on both eyes) are turning gray.?
I was sitting with my friend & she said my eyes were gray. I looked into a mirror and the outside of my iris were turning gray. It was kind of weird for me because I have dark brown eyes. I'm young & I've never had contacts. My eye sight is fine. Does anybody know what it going on?

Are you sure that the outside of you iris was gray before, but you've just never noticed it until your friend pointed it out? Believe it or not, things like that happen all the time. You don't notice things about yourself until other people point them out.

However, it is important to realize that your iris color can look very different based on the lighting your are in, what color clothes you are wearing, the color of the eyeshadow you have on, etc. All these colors around you can affect how you perceive your eye color. It is not that your eye color changes; but it just looks different in different situations.

Wearing contact lenses or having good eyesight has nothing to do with your iris.

What your iris does do is regulate the amount of light that goes into your eye through the pupil. If the iris contracts, the pupil gets larger (the black dot in the center of your iris) to let more light in, such as in dim or dark environments. If the iris expands, the pupil gets smaller and lets less light in, such as in bright sunny situations. The iris also plays a role in how your eye is able to focus on things up close where a small pupil allows you to focus easier.

And actually, when you look at the iris through a microscope like an eye doctor (optometrist) does, the iris is actually made up of tons of different colors that all blend together to give you your "total" eye color. For example, I have blue eyes but I also have spots of green and brown and grey in them that create the blue color (when you look at them with a microscope).

Either way, chances are you have just never notices this gray area before and/or it was the lighting or clothes you were wearing that made things look different. I wouldn't worry about it! Instead, be excited you have such dynamic and colorful eyes!

I am an optometry intern. And I certainly notice how what I wear, what eyeshadow color I use, and what lighting I am in that makes my eye color appear more or less blue.
