The first step would be to find out WHY your eyes are bloodshot.

Do they feel dry? --- If you have dry eyes, they most certainly can also be red.

Do you have allergies? --- Any irritants such as makeup, outdoor/indoor allergies, pets, etc can be irritating your eyes and causing inflammation (red eyes).

Do you spend a lot of time on the computer? --- Studies have shown that you blink less when you use a computer. So if you are not blinking enough to hydrate and protect your eye, red eyes can certainly result.

Are you taking any medications? --- Some side effects of medications can affect your eyes.

Do you have any medical conditions? --- Certain medical conditions can very much involve the eyes.

The best way to figure out why your eyes are bloodshot is to get a complete eye exam with an eye doctor (optometrist). You don't have to answer the questions I posted, and it is certainly not a complete list of what it might be, but these are just a few of the things the optometrist may ask to try to figure out what is going on, in addition to examining the health of your eyes.

Kudos to you for not jumping on the eye drop bandwagon! Yes, Visine and Clear Eyes can help "get the red out" but they really are not meant for long-term permanent use and can actually make your red eyes WORSE if you don't use them properly.

So call your eye doctor and get an eye exam!

I am an optometry intern.
