Contact lense trouble - eyes are instantly sore?!

Question: Contact lense trouble - eyes are instantly sore?
I recently got contact lenses for the first time, and have been trying them out for only a few hours a day to get used to them. Yesterday, for the first time, I was able to have them in for 5 hours with no trouble, but this morning and a few other times, the minute I put them in, my eye watered loads, hurt quite a bit, and felt like I had a thousand eyelashes stuck in my eye..

Is it normal to feel this, or what could it be?

I am checking that the contacts are the right way round, and I am cleaning them as recommended..

You should go visit your eye doctor... I've been a contact wearer for about 15 years, and while they burn for just a few minutes when I put them in, they are very comfortable, and I don't really even notice they are in.

However, contact lens wearers are susceptible to corneal ulcers. I went many years with no problems, decided to try a new brand of contacts, and within a month had 3 separate corneal ulcers. These are VERY painful, feels like someone threw a handful of sandspurs into your eye, and the only relief is taking out the contacts. (Plus, they require a slew of antibiotics to get rid of them, and left untreated can cause permanent damage or blindness)

I would go to the eye doctor as soon as possible and have them examined. It's possible that you don't have the right fit, you are allergic to the lenses you got, or that there is something worse happening. Don't mess around when it comes to your eyes!

Good luck.

its not normal. Have you looked at them close to to see if you've got dust or lint on them? thats easy enough done. If you have then you get it off by putting the lense on the palm of your hand and throwing loads of solution onto it to swill the dust/foreign object off. The other thing is that you might have damaged teh lenses, small nick in the edge etc. If you get them inside out or in the wrong eyes the symptom is more tha tyou can't see properly and they dont' fit very well so move in the eye.

You might have really sensitive eyes. I had that problem, so my optometrist recommended that I switch to Clear Care contact solution, and now I have no problem. You may also need better quality contacts as well.

Dear Amy,

If you are experiencing redness or irritation while wearing your lenses, you should contact your eye care professional. They will offer recommendations that limit discomfort and redness of your eyes.

no, that doesn't sound "normal".

you should call the optometrist (US) or optician (UK) who Rx'd those contacts & have them take another look...
