Well your vision should be 20/20. I suppose it is possible they could have messed up the screening test, but it's sort of looking like you will be getting some glasses. Of course, if you find them a major pain, you probably wouldn't have to wear them all the time, as your vision isn't all that bad. You could get contacts, but try glasses first, they are easier to deal with, particularly if you are young.
If your vision is 20/40 and 20/50, you don't see just fine. You just don't know you don't see just fine.
Whether or not you 'need' glasses is up to you if you can function fine without them. You won't be able to drive without glasses or contacts though. I'd suggest you get glasses and see what you've been missing.
You will probably need glasses for distance. You should see 20/20 so your eyes are fairly bad. You may not need them all the time, but for class and driving they can make a huge difference.
