Does staring at a computer screen strain your eyes?!

Question: Does staring at a computer screen strain your eyes?
In the last two weeks I haven't been able to read the tv channels on tv clearly at all, unless im quite close to it & I'm struggling to read things from a far distance, which I was fine with before. My sight was fine about untill about 2/3 weeks ago. I'm pretty sure it's because I'm on the computer ALOT and I stare at the screen quite close. Is this temporary or are my eyes permanently damaged now?

Answers:

Staring continuously at the screen will cause your eyes to strain. To counteract this, focus on a distant object (across the room, or out the window) for a few seconds to a few minutes, every 20-60 minutes. this will help to relieve the strain. Another exercise for your eyes is to close them, and then role your eyes for a few seconds, every 20-60 minutes. The eye strain your experiencing now is temporary. Also, do not watch TV in total darkness. The extreme darkness followed by extreme light (of the TV screen) will cause your pupils to dilate excessively, and this will cause eye strain (and in some case, headaches).

the advice given here for reducing eye strain is all good. I'd just like to add that you should adjust your screen properly. The screen should be at arms length and your eyes level with the top of the screen. Laptops are not suitable for heavy usage as you can't do this with them and you need to add a seperate screen/keyboard. Big computer firms do not allow people to use laptops all day. Also make sure that you sit at 90 degrees to any light source , e.g. dont' face the window, dont' have a light directly behind you.

Strain is temporary. There is no evidence that computers damage your eyes permanently . If there was then all computer professionals would have eyesight issues and be suing thepeople they work for.

it definitely strains eyes. best thing is to take break every 10-15 min. look away from screen, blink eyes, do neck excercises, just walk away from computer, look outside window at far objects. these will soothe eyes greatly.

dont worry , your eyes wont be permanently damaged
in future do take breaks from the screen every hour or so
an AR coating ( anti - reflection ) on your glasses will help ease the strain
you can get these even if you dont have an eye prescription

my glasses prescription is specifically for eye strain and computer work...you might want to got to the eye dr just in case you need glasses.
