I am afraid that is a common problem with advancing age. The lens would quickly damage the cornea if you have dry eyes.

GP for more years than I care to remember

A larger issue is your need for bifocals. In your glasses, you look through the top part to see distance and the bottom to see up close. Contacts that move with your eyes do not tend to work as well. There are bifocal lenses available but wearing them involves making some compromises about your vision. If you are tired of wearing glasses, get evaluated for cataract surgery. Most people near 70 have them to some degree. Modern cataract surgery can greatly reduce and in some cases eliminate your need for glasses.

optometrist

There are many different types of contact lenses, some of which are specially made to give the eye more moisture and letting it breath better. It is true that the eyes dry out as we get older, but everyone is individual and you might be lucky. An optometrist can perform a test called TBUT - Tear break up time. To asses the dryness of your eyes, but if an optometrist has already told you that they are too dry then sadly there's no way around it.

Get a second opinion. Dry eyes are certainly a problem but some opticians are less supportive than others and feel that as you get older you can just get glasses and get on with it. Try some of the fixes for dry eyes before going. Might not work but its worth a shot. You might not get a long wearing time , depends a bit what you want them for if its going to be worth it.

There are some well known, breathable brands for contact lenses that come in multifocal, presbyopic or bifocals. You should definitely ask your eye doctor, but this article on bifocal and multifocal lenses might help with your decision.

I Think It All Comes Down To The Condition Of Your Eyes, But I Do Know That If You Are Long Sighted You Can't Wear Contacts For Very Long Because Usually With Long Sighted People Each Eye Is Used For A Different Purpose (FE: One Eye Is Used For Reading And The Other Eye Is Used For Seeing) I'd Just Go Into An Opticians And Tell Them What Your Concern Is And See What They Say

Go to an optometrist they can tell you exactly what can work for your eyes!

not a good age to start sadly .eyes do get dry as we get older.

dont be such a woman, be a man and wear them anyway.
