Usually, you will get the best exam from private practitioners who have been in business for themselves for at least 5 years. However, you will usually pay more there for your exam than you would at, say, lenscrafters. Also, the doctors at lenscrafters and other retail chains usually go from place to place while the private practitioner is always at his or her office. You can also build up a relationship with a private practitioner where the Dr. there gets to "know" you and your eye health better than you can at a retail chain. You'll also usually get better service there.

So, you have a decision to make.

If you want cheap, then go cheap but then expect "average".

If you want "excellent", then don't expect "cheap".

In some places a "bip bam thank you maam" exam takes 15 minutes. Costs around $40. I work for a priviate Dr. and our exam costs $74. But the exam takes between 30 and 45 minutes and you can be assured that the Rx given is "spot on".

I suggest you get your glasses online. I've been buying my glasses online for years and I've saved a lot of money. If this is your first time, I suggest this site:

http://www.optical4less.com/

Easy to use and friendly site. There are others out there, but for now this site is very reputable and is a good place to start off. The benefits of buying online is that you save a lot of money as they sell prescription glasses for as low as 15$. The quality is also excellent, comparable to the ones bought in stores.

As for sizes, measure your own glasses in millimeters and compare it to the measurements on the website. If it is +/- 3-5mm it is fine. You also need a prescription. If you need a new one, I'd suggest a walmart optician, remember to ask them for the prescription. It is your right to obtain a copy of the prescription so don't let the opticians bully you. Good luck!
