I have started to worry about my eyes?!

Question: I have started to worry about my eyes?
I got prescribed with glasses when I was about 6. I wore them for a few years but then suddenly stops wearing them because of other kids, you know how they can be..

I am 14 now and visited the opticians yesterday for the first time in years since I want to get contact lenses. When I took the test, they said I am currently over the allowed driving limit with my eyes because they are -3. When they take that test where you have to see the letters, I couldn't see the very bottom letters even WITH glasses on.

They said I have dry eyes therefore I can't get contact lenses just yet. I have to go back within a few weeks to see if it was just that day or my eyes are normally that dry. I am really worried. I can't get my glasses back till Friday and I am scared.

The optician said he doesn't know how I'm managed to get by since my eyes are really bad yet I can see the board just fine at school and I sit right at the back?

Hello Sam, now i get the impression you don't want to wear glasses because your scared the other kids will bully you or something. Now, i wear glasses and have done for the past seven years and honestly, i have never been teased once about them. I've been teased about other stuff such as being labeled ''Emo''. Now i perceive you as a popular kind of person so even if you did get glasses i don't think you would be teased.

Becuase you have ''dry eyes'' obviously you can't have contacts yet but you soon will be able to. I wouldn't worry, i know someone who's been in the same boat as you, but they now have contact lenses after a month but patience is a virtue. Please don't worry; there's a 95% chance you will be laughing about this situation in a few weeks.

its better that if you check with doctors.

aww try not to worry. I can't see the letters right at the bottom either and I have a full driving licence and have done for 20years. You dont need to be able to see the letters right on the bottom of the board to be able to drive, as long as you can see about 4lines down you'll be fine for driving in the future.

If you can read things on the board at school then you really have nothing to worry about. My daughter has an eye problem that she was born with and will never be able to drive and has to always sit at the front but she manages in life really well. She can't have contacts at the moment so is still stuck in glasses, shes the same age as you.

If you can get on with contacts well done you!! They will make such a difference to you, I'm sure if you have dry eyes they can give you something for that so you can still wear contacts. Ask them about artifical tears, and if your still not happy go to a different optician. As I've found out, some opticians are better with children than others.
Boots opticians missed a problem in my daughter that could've left her blind, it was only through luck of going to the hospital that it was found. Yet Vision Express are fantastic with her and spend ages going through things with her.

I know its easy to say but try not to worry. xxx

Seems a bit odd they can't correct your eyes fully . Mine are a lot worse than yours but are corrected to see the bottom line. It could be though that the optician has chosen to undercorrect. You don't need to be able to see that bottom line. Ask him about that.

Dry eyes are a pain,., There are loads of tips on answers about this. Drink enough water, get some fresh air. computer screens do dry the eyes. Hot compresses may work. Some opticians do tend to think that things are a major problem when they haven't been. You get used to not having corrected visions and yes I knwo exactly what its like at school. I used to have teachers take mine if they were annoyed with me.

Well, first, there's nothing to worry about. Your uncorrected visual acuity either with or without glasses does not meet the state mandated visual acuity for operating a motor vehicle. That means if you go to get your license renewed, you will fail. However, it sounds like the new glasses will correct that. -3.00 is not that bad.

You just "think" you can see clearly. We see this all the time. People become "accustomed" to how they are seeing. We see this with children and teens all the time. When they get their new (or first) pair of glasses, you can see their eyes light up because everything comes into focus for them. I tell them "now you can see what you are getting in to" :)

Good luck
