Is it wrong to consider laser eye surgery?!

Question: Is it wrong to consider laser eye surgery?
I have told my mom about getting it after I get enough money saved up, but she says that it is wrong and an intention to be perfect in the world.

I really don't see it like that. I have really bad vision - so bad that I can't see a book right in front of my face with my glasses off. I don't care about how I look with glasses, I just want normal eye vision. It really affects my self esteem and it makes it hard to do my job because I have to wear safety goggles for most of my shifts. I also like to go swimming, and can't even see people without glasses, so I can't do that with my friends anymore. I am always getting hit with a basketball to my glasses. I've tried contacts, and I hate them.

what do you think about laser eye surgery? Do you think it is wrong to consider it and why?

Answers:

Its certainly not wrong. If you had a limp for example would she consider ti wrong to have surgery to fix it? I would just ignore this. its not about being perfect its about being able to function normally. Its not like plastic surgery which is just for appearances sake. Try and explain to her that its not a cosmetic thing. Loads of people think that worrying about glasses is all aobut how they look and as you say its not. There are risks and disadvantages though apart from the cost and you should weight that up carefullly.

In the meantime why are you having such problems with contacts? Can we help you with this? I've worn contacts for 40 years and find they get round these disadvantages and I love swimming. I use mine to snorkel and before I had them I couldn't see well enough to snorkel.

Not at all. If laser eye surgery performed by any certified and experienced doctor then it get best result. further some age factor also plays major role for success of operation. Plus post operation period is also very important. You have to follow up completely the instructions of surgeon after operation. Take unto your mind that post operation period is most important then the day of operation. So, don;t worry and carry on with surgery and be free from glasses. Good luck to you.

Eyesight is not a cosmetic issue, it is a medical one. However, you would be wise to tread carefully in evaluating surgery at a young age. Get evaluated by more than one surgeon and look into the side effects and risk carefully. You want to make sure you are truly a good candidate and you understand the effects. There are several details to pay attention to (corneal thickness, potential for dry eyes, etc.)

I dont think that it is morally wrong. There are pros and cons to it, but is not a moral decision.

Do your own research on this and make sure you understand what you are doing. Once you have done that, you can make the best decision for you.

There is nothing wrong about this, as long as you do it some place safe! If you are unhappy and you can fix it, there is nothing wrong with that.

Laser vision correction is a great alternative to eyeglasses and contact lenses. Not only can it help you see better it can also help you enjoy a quality of vision that is superior to what is possible with prescription glasses or contact lenses. Like you said, it’s not a matter of looks or being perfect, it’s about having a better quality of life.

Not everyone is a candidate for laser vision correction, so you may want to consider going to a reputable local clinic in your area for a consultation with your mom. You’ll be able to ask some questions and find out if you’re a candidate, and your mother might see that it’s a procedure that could really help improve your life.

Good luck,
