The doctor was right - we're all born farsighted, and most of us grow out of it as we get taller and the eye lengthens. In your daughter's case, she may or may not need some correction in the future. That's a moderately high plus Rx, and she should be wearing her glasses full time. With little kids, they often don't want to tolerate higher plus prescriptions like that, because everything in the distance will blur a bit until her brain gets used to that close up correction. So they'll look over them, or refuse to wear them, etc. and they never truly adapt to the Rx. It's also possible that she does see better in the distance without them, since her old glasses are stronger than what she now needs.
Astigmatism is when the eye is slightly oval or football shaped instead of being perfectly round. Flatter spots on the cornea create distortion, which the glasses compensate for by adding power at the necessary axis. It's not a big deal, and it's not surprising that she has developed some astigmatism. Most of us have at least a little bit.
