surgery to fix hearing loss?!
Question: Surgery to fix hearing loss?
Answers:
If you are considering getting a Cochlear Implant, I would suggest that you talk to MANY people who have had the procedure done. (Not only those who are selling the service.)
You are a good candidate if you were born with severe or total hearing loss. You are a good candidate if you can hear some and you are familiar with language. If you see a doctour, they will do an intake evaluation.
I don't know if you know the ins and outs associated with this procedure.
* it is only for Deaf and profoundly hard-of-hearing
* the first thing that they do is destroy all residual hearing (irreversibly)
* the procedure is not always successful
* sound will bypass the ears; you will not hear passively (you have to learn how to interpret sounds)
* sound comes through a microphone; you will never hear like a Hearing person does
* you have a magnetic rock in your head; it can be at least as annoying as a hearing aid (hard to sleep)
* the outer receiver is even more obvious than hearing aids
* there is a high incidence of infection and rejection
* it can increase the risk of adult Meningitis by 30 times
* there is a risk of nerve damage
* many CI patients have been known to die on the operating table and post-op
* you can never have heart paddles, pacemaker, etc (you run the risk of being shocked by these and other things)
I have only one Deaf friend, an adult, who had the procedure done, and she is delighted with the results. But I would not recommend going by what one person said. I have heard of many people who were not happy with the results.

Yes this is the Vision section but maybe you are asking about a Cochlear implant ? If regular hearing aids are working for you the implant would be overkill. Maybe there are other options via surgery but I am not aware of them, consult your doctor. Good luck - I understand what a big problem hearing is as my mother needs to wear hearing aids and even with them she does NOT have 20/20 hearing.
