Why did I get air sprayed in my eyes at my eye appointment?!

Question: Why did I get air sprayed in my eyes at my eye appointment?
I was at my eye appointment today to get a new prescription for glasses/contacts and there were these machine things and one of them sprayed air onto my eyes. What is the point of that?

Answers:

It's called a "puff test". It's one way (there are others) of checking what is called your Inter-Ocular Pressure. The pressure inside your eye should be within a certain range, if it is too high, then that is a possible indication (but not final indication) of glaucoma. Glaucoma can begin to adversely affect the optic nerve. Any pressure too high may need medical attention. There is usually no way of telling if a person has high pressure within the eye unless it is tested. (The same for high blood pressure)

If you don't like the puff test, the doctor can also check your IOP during the exam with drops in the eyes.

I had that happen to me once in all my years of getting my eyes checked. Apparently it is to check your eye pressure.
