Scary experience in one eye (please read)?!

Question: Scary experience in one eye (please read)?
This happened a little while ago but I've always wanted to know what it was. I was just sitting in school doing some work on the computer when I got this little flash in my eye, y'know the kind you would get if a camera flash went off and you get that weird flash in your vision for a while after? But it was like a blind spot, completly blocking out the part of the screen in was on. Then as it went away I started to get this wavy vision and it spread right round the edges of my vision, and then almost completly covered it. Took about 20 minutes for it to go away. What was this? It has happened to me once before that time as well.

I am quite concerned about my sight, being short sighted and having to wear glasses. Am I going blind? My vision is fine right now though.

Thanks in advance.

Answers:

Sounds like you had an ocular migrane. First your central vision goes and then you get zig-zag lines that shimmer and get bigger as it moves to the periphery.

Your not going blind. It isn't related to wearing glasses and it is usually not serious. If it occurs frequently see your general doctor.

optometrist

It's best to get this checked out, it could be a migraine I often get them, and the exact vision you just described. Although I had a similar experience when using a computer at college, I lost my vision like how you described for three months, it turned out to be a mild stroke, hence the importance in having symptoms like this diagnosed by a professional.

Personal experience

Sounds like a migraine with aura. If the headache isn't present but the visual disturbances are it's called an acephalgic migraine (A-cef-al-gic). It most likely not visually related. If it happens again, talk to your doctor. Here's a little info on visual aura: http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/migrain… .

By the way - it's definitely NOT glaucoma and you're not going blind.

Optometry student.

i would suggest going and seeing your gp. don't muddy the waters on here.people may not be totally honest with you as you are quite young. ask your parents to book your appointment or do it yourself.personally i don't think you are going blind.

What you describe is called migraine aura. Many people get migraine aura without any pain.

It is not of concern, but your doctor can treat it if you are uncomfortable.

Glaucoma? You should really see an eye doctor to make sure your eyes are healthy.

you should go to doctor.
