Can scotopic sensitivity syndrome appear at random?!

Question: Can scotopic sensitivity syndrome appear at random?
My younger brother is 11 years old and has recently claimed to be unable to read black text on white paper, only a couple of months ago his reading was fine. He has used this syndrome as an excuse to get out of all sorts of things of late, especially home work. My father and I believe that he is lying for the moment, until we have the time to take him to an optometrist.

So I was just wondering what the odds are of my brother developing scotopic sensitivity syndrome in a couple months.

Answers:

Individuals do not suddenly develop scotopic sensitivity syndrome/Irlen Syndrome. A sudden occurrence of symptoms should be immediately checked to rule out any medical problems. Your brother should be seen by your doctor as well as having his vision check. If the problem is not medical, it can be Irlen/Scotopic Sensitivity Syndrome. In this case, there is usually a change in the amount of reading that is required. Your brother has good reading skills but is now having to do more reading than before. The longer he has to read and do his homework, the more strain, fatigue and distortions he experiences. The solution is Irlen overlays and Irlen Spectral Filters and testing is done by a certified Irlen Center not optometrists. To find an Irlen Center visit www.irlen.com
