What lens index should I go with?!

Question: What lens index should I go with?
With a -2.75 Rx for farsightedness in both eyes what kind of lens type should I go with?

1.50 standard
1.57 mid-index
1.59 polycarbonate
1.61 high index
1.67 high index

I understand that the higher index you go the thinner the lens. I'm ordering plastic/acetate frames, one pair is half rims. Just wondering how thin I need to go with my Rx strength...

Answers:

That isn't an overly strong prescription so thickness won't be a huge concern.

The 1.57 for the plastic frame, and the 1.59 Poly for the semi rimless would be ideal...or you could go with the poly in both.

There is no need to go higher than that though , it would be overkill with no benefits.

EDIT *****

You had written - 2.75, so we could already see you are nearsighted, not farsighted...no it doesn't change anything anyway.

And 1.61 as suggested below is very unnecessary with that power. It wouldn't be any thinner than the 1.59...just more expensive.

Anti reflection is a nice option if you want to spend a bit more.

If you're concerned about Cost - then the 1.57 mid-index is adequate.

If you want your spectacles to be nice, elegant and professional.. then go for 1.61.

Stay away from Polycarbonate... the material warps, scratches really easy... and oxidises (goes opaque) if it comes in contact with any 'solvents' like some household cleaners, nail polish removers, acetone.

Lastly, always go for Multi-coated lenses... if the camera on your cheap mobile/cell phone has this coating to take better photos, then your eyes deserve to see clearer too.

1.61 is 0.02 index higher than 1.59... so the thickness reduction is equivalent to 1.59 over 1.57... why did you recommend 1.59 over 1.57 for the semi=rimless frames if you think that 0.02 difference is negligle?

If you're going for a plastic frame, the frame will probably cover a lot of the edge thickness. It also depends on the size of your frame. The larger your frame, the thicker the edges will be. But for a standard frame size, I would say 1.61 high index... you should get anti-reflection coating with that too.

You don't need the 1.67. I'm a -12.00 and that's the one I use. The standard should be fine, as your prescription isn't bad at all. The rimless bottom might make a difference, so I would ask your doctor what he or she recommends.
