Question: This question may offend some but I have to know.....?
have you seen people with one eye that looks normal but the other eye appears to look to the right towards the ear? or the eye looks toward the nose? What is that person's vision like? can they see out of that eye or what?

Answers:

It is a medical condition called "amblyopia" and is commonly known as "lazy eye". The vision in the affected eye isn't as strong necessarily as the other eye, but most people can still see out of the eye that doesn't track. The brain has compensated for the weaker vision in the affect eye by utilizing the dominant eye, and over time, the muscles of the weaker eye do not track the eye as it should to follow the other. I had corrective surgery where a portion of my eye muscle was cut out of my weaker eye to allow my eyes to align. I can see out of both eyes and always have, but vision in my "lazy eye" is diminshed. Like many conditions, people can be very self-conscious with this (as it is the butt of many jokes in movies etc.) so please focus on the eye that is focused on you. The person will not realize necessarily that their weak eye has wandered when they are looking at you, so be sensitive!
This isn't the best explanation, but I hope it helps..
Cheers

This condition is called strabismus or esotropia if the eye turns in or exotropia if it turns out. It is also sometimes called squint. Sometime it results in amblyopia. Most of the time, they have had this condition since childhood. As a result, they can see only out of one eye at a time. If you cross your eyes, you see double. Seeing double is not a good way to go through life so the visual system has the ability to turn one eye off. If the person alternates eyes that turn, he may have very good vision in each eye. If the same eye is always turned, he will have poor vision in the eye that is turned. A few people end with an eye turned as an adult. Since the visual system is not as flexible, they will see double. Many of these people wear a patch over one eye.
