can this lead to blindness? (open please)?!

Question: Can this lead to blindness? (open please)?
im 17 and my vision gets worse and worse every year last year it was a -3.50 and this year its a -4.0 do you think this can lead to full blindness or is just gona just get worse to about -5 or -6 and stall?

Answers:

The definition of legally blind is: Vision is 20/200 or worse in the better eye, even WHEN CORRECTED with glasses or contact lenses. OR Your visual field in the better eye is 20 degrees or less.

With that said, you can see just fine with your glasses on, right? Then you are NOT blind and never will be blind as long as your glasses work to correct your vision. That's just not what blind is. So no, I highly doubt you will ever be "fully blind" because chances are, you're glasses or contacts will clear things up perfectly for you.

As far as if your prescription is going to keep increasing .... that's anyone's guess because it is different for everyone. Both genetics and your environment play a role in how your eyes will or will not change.

For most people, their eyes stop changing when they are fully grown around age 20 to 22. So it is possible your eyes may keep changing for a few years. Or they may stay where they are. Like I said, there is no way to predict it and really, not much you can do to prevent it.

So key idea: Don't worry about it!

If you can see just fine with your glasses, you are good to go.

I am an optometry intern. My vision also got "worse" through my high school years until it stabilized around -5.75 D in each eye. Then I got LASIK!

Its really not possible to tell what eyesight you will end up with. Typically eyesight stablizes in peoples 20's but tehre is no guarantee. It isn't going to lead to you being blind though. Vision can be corrected to massively higher levels than this and currently your eyes are at a quite moderate level. It is unlikely they will get to even the high perscriptions opticians talk about at the -13's etc, which can still be corrected.

so does mine. I think mine is that too but im a year younger. I don't know if it will. we might be legally blind when we are 50, but we can still hear, touch, smell, and taste. and ive noticed that in school when im looking for halls, I can use my sense of smell to find them better than my vision. how cool is that! it makes me more aware because i cant see. good luck. may the squinters and the four eyes live in peace.
