Can leaving my contacts in for over 12 hours damage my eyes &/or vision?!

Question: Can leaving my contacts in for over 12 hours damage my eyes &/or vision?
As an A-typical 20-something year old I don't get, or require, that much sleep. So I normally leave my contacts in for about 12-16 hours a day on average. I am used to it so it doesn't hurt or anything and when they have been in for about 15-16 hours and become uncomfortable I take them out right away. People keep telling me that doing so will make my vision worse, which it is already awful, or even damage my eyes. Is this true and should I be concerned?

Answers:

Your vision isn't damaged by using contacts. The risk with wearing them too long is that you don't get enough oxygen to your eyes as contacts reduce teh amount of oxygen they get. Now you are certainly using on the outer limits of what is recommended but you aren't really exceeding it. You do need to be careful though. Try and make sure that your eyes get some lens free time in the day - put them in after breakfast , give them a break before going to bed at night. Keep an eye out for teh first signs of problems with oxygen deprivation which tends to be red eyes after you take the lenses out. Note that pain is NOT a symptom, because the surface of teh eye starts to die you get less pain and contacts feel more comfortable. Make sure you get regular checkups as the eye doctor will look for the first sign of oxygen deprivation. If at all possible try for the odd day when you don't use them.

I did this when I was in my 20's and had problems with oxygen deprivation as i went to a useless optiican who told me there were no problems if my lenses were comfortable. Nothing got picked up on till my vision started to blur and I got a second opinion. However I was wearing 18 hours or more a day and they were old fashioned lenses. Lenses now allow more oxygen transmission to the eye, but it is partly about fit as well. If lenses are too tight they allow less oxygen to teh eye.

Your eyes will let you know when you have left your contacts in too long! I would put my contacts in at 7:00 am and would not take them out until 9 or 10 pm most days. As long as your eyes don't dry out and you don't have that scratchy, dry feeling when you blink, you shouldn't have any problems.

Wearing contacts for 12 hours could lead to corneal edema and other serious complications.

Corneal edema don't show any symptoms until its too late. When its late, it means permanent defects in your eyes.

It won't damage them but it could make you prone to bacteria build up which could result in an eye infection. If you clean them every night and let them soak, it will prolong the lifespan and maximize their moistness.

Try not to dose off or go to sleep with them in. That's the bad thing about wearing them for a long stretch at a time that I have run into.

it is not a good thing to do. it makes your eyes get booger loking things around it

personal experience.

Yes, I know people who had surgery because their contacts were pretty much glued to their eyes.

It depends on what type of contact you have. At best you should ask your eye doctor.
